What is a Wine Labs ID?

The same bottle shows up as merchant text, supplier rows, auction lots, restaurant lists and cellar notes, and every source spells it differently. The Wine Labs ID is the one record they all point to.

It does not change
Store a Wine Labs ID once. Every later price request, enrichment call or report comes back to the same record, and you never match that wine again.
Wine, then vintage, then format
The ID names the wine. Vintages sit under it and formats under those, so a 2015 magnum and a 2019 bottle are two facts about one wine, not two wines.
The same description everywhere
Producer, region, appellation, grape, style, colour and label images come with the ID, so every system that uses it describes the wine the same way.
It works with LWIN
When a wine has an LWIN, its Wine Labs ID carries it. Send an LWIN-7 or LWIN-11 and get the Wine Labs record; send a Wine Labs ID and get the LWIN back.

Wine Labs ID and LWIN connect in both directions.

Wine Labs ID and LWIN map to each other both ways: a Wine Labs ID carries its wine’s LWIN, and an LWIN comes back as its Wine Labs ID. A dataset keyed on LWIN and one keyed on Wine Labs IDs join directly, with nothing to match again.

Wine Labs ID also reaches the wines and spirits beyond the fine-wine market LWIN was designed for: everyday bottles, restaurant-list wines, spirits and producers from newer regions. 600,000+ of them have a Wine Labs ID and no LWIN, and they get the same treatment as a first growth.

An identifier is only useful for what it joins to.

Look up a Wine Labs ID and you see what the market says about that bottle: what merchants ask for it today, what it made at auction, what it traded for on the exchanges, how critics and drinkers scored it, and which restaurants pour it. For the US you also get wholesale price postings and label approvals.

Keep your LWIN codes

The link runs both ways. Nothing you have already coded with LWIN needs to change; LWIN stays your interchange code for fine wine, and the bottles without one gain an identity.

Made for software

Stable numeric IDs, batch matching, a REST API and an MCP server for AI agents. Store the ID once and stop matching the same wine again.

Three ways in, one identity out.

Send a wine name, a file or an LWIN. Each comes back as the same Wine Labs ID, with the LWIN next to it when the wine has one. From there, the ID reaches every dataset Wine Labs holds.

Questions

What is a Wine Labs ID?

A Wine Labs ID is the canonical identifier Wine Labs assigns to each wine or spirit. It is a stable numeric ID that carries the LWIN code where one exists, and it is the key every Wine Labs price, auction, critic and restaurant record is joined on.

How does Wine Labs ID relate to LWIN?

Wine Labs ID and LWIN map to each other in both directions: a Wine Labs ID carries its wine’s LWIN, and an LWIN resolves to its Wine Labs ID, so data coded in either one connects to the other. Wine Labs ID also covers more than 600,000 wines and spirits beyond the fine-wine market LWIN was designed for.

How do I get access to Wine Labs IDs?

Through the matching API, which starts at $25 per month, through Cellar Pricer for inventory files, and through enterprise plans for bulk and ongoing matching. Every Wine Labs product returns the same identifier.

Can I convert an LWIN to a Wine Labs ID, or the other way round?

Yes. Send an LWIN-7 or LWIN-11 to the matching API and the response includes the Wine Labs ID. Send a Wine Labs ID and the record includes its LWIN where one exists.

How do I get Wine Labs IDs for my whole inventory?

Upload the file to Cellar Pricer or send rows to the batch matching endpoint, up to 100 per call. Each row comes back with a Wine Labs ID, the LWIN where available, and a confidence signal, and uncertain matches can be reviewed in a dashboard.

Does Wine Labs ID cover spirits?

Yes. Close to 200,000 of the identities are spirits: whisky, cognac, rum, tequila, gin and more, alongside 600,000 wines. A cellar or shop file that mixes spirits and wine matches in one pass.

How accurate is the matching?

In a head-to-head test on a real inventory file, Wine Labs matched 94.5% of rows, compared with 65% for another LWIN-based matcher on the same file. The vector matching service that powers it is tuned for precision above 99%, and matches below its thresholds are flagged rather than guessed.
