To Kalon Vineyard Prices, Owners and Provenance
To Kalon Vineyard prices from 14,192 auction lots and 4,455 live offers: auction results run at 62% of US retail asks. Owners, bottlings, vintages.
To Kalon Vineyard is one Oakville site, but it is not one wine. Wine Labs tracks 81 To Kalon-designated wines from Robert Mondavi, Schrader, Paul Hobbs, Realm, TOR, Carter and dozens of smaller labels. On November 4, 2026, 68 of them had live 750 ml retail offers, and 77 had auction results on record.
The data gives one clear answer for buyers: at auction, To Kalon Cabernet sells well below what US retailers ask for the same wine and vintage. Across 136 matched wine-vintage pairs, the median auction result was 62% of the median US retail ask. Not one pair sold above it. The one exception to the pattern is a format, not a vintage: Schrader's Old Sparky magnum.
This guide covers who owns the vineyard, which bottlings have a real market, and how to price one.

A retail offer is an asking price. An auction lot is a completed sale, including the buyer's premium. The two answer different questions, and most of this article is about the gap between them.
Who owns To Kalon Vineyard
To Kalon is shared ground. The acreage you read depends on which boundary the writer used.
| Owner or boundary | Reported size | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Historic Crabb core | About 359 acres | GuildSomm |
| Wider historic landscape | About 825 acres, about 678 planted | GuildSomm |
| Published modern totals | About 500 to 687 acres | San Francisco Chronicle |
| Robert Mondavi Winery (Constellation Brands) | About 450 acres | San Francisco Chronicle |
| Andy Beckstoffer | 89 acres, bought from Beaulieu Vineyard in 1993 | San Francisco Chronicle |
| UC Davis research block | About 20 acres | GuildSomm |
The San Francisco Chronicle's ownership account names Robert Mondavi Winery, owned by Constellation Brands, as the largest holder. The GuildSomm history separates the Crabb core from the wider landscape. It also records that Mondavi held 250 acres of the original core by 1978, and that Beckstoffer replanted his parcel in 1994 with closer spacing and modern trellising.
Ownership explains the labels. Mondavi and its To Kalon Vineyard Co. brand bottle Constellation fruit. Beckstoffer sells fruit to other wineries, and those wines carry "Beckstoffer To Kalon" on the label. In our catalog, 65 of the 81 wines are Beckstoffer To Kalon bottlings (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and red blends). That is why so many producers can put the same vineyard name on a bottle.
A short history of the name
According to Farr Vintners' account, Hamilton Walker Crabb bought 240 acres in Oakville in 1868 and added 119 acres in 1881. He built a winery as Hermosa Vineyards in 1872 and renamed it To-Kalon in 1886, from a Greek phrase for "the highest beauty". The same account records the USDA's Oakville Experiment Vineyard in 1903.
The Library of Congress landscape documentation singles out 1940s plantings and the I-Block Sauvignon Blanc section. That block still has its own label. Wine Labs tracks Mondavi's To Kalon I Block Fumé Blanc as a separate wine from its To Kalon Reserve Fumé Blanc.
Why one vineyard makes many different Cabernets
Vinfolio's technical description places To Kalon at the base of the Mayacamas. Upper sections are gravelly and drain fast. Lower soils toward Highway 29 are deeper and richer. More gravel and less water-holding capacity mean more vine stress and smaller, more tannic berries.
Add different owners, clones, farming and winemakers, and the vineyard name tells you little about the bottle. The market agrees. Among To Kalon wines with at least 40 sales in the last three years, auction medians run from $123 to $568 per 750 ml. Price the producer and the cuvée, not the vineyard.

The first two price columns mix vintages, so read them with care. The last column is the fair comparison. It matches each auction vintage to the same retail vintage, and uses only pairs with at least three US retail offers and five auction sales.
Schrader dominates the secondary market. Six of the 16 wines in the table are Schrader bottlings, and Schrader's Old Sparky (below) adds 682 more lots.
Auction prices sit about 40% below US retail asks
Across the 25 wines and 136 wine-vintage pairs that pass the sample filter, the median auction result is 0.62 times the median US retail ask. The middle half of pairs falls between 0.53 and 0.70. All 136 pairs sold below the retail ask.
Median ratio per wine across matched vintages. Auction sales Nov 2023 to Nov 2026, per 750 ml.

| Paul Hobbs Beckstoffer To Kalon | 0.52× | 17 vintages |
| Schrader Heritage Clone | 0.47× | 4 vintages |
| Schrader MB Monastery Block | 0.41× | 5 vintages |
The gap is not a US quirk. With non-US retailers only, the median ratio is 0.55 across 84 pairs. With all retailers, it is 0.59 across 154 pairs.
Three cautions apply before you treat this as a bargain:
- Asks are not sales. A retail median is what sellers list. A bottle can sit at that price for months.
- The auction figure includes the buyer's premium but not tax, shipping or storage. Add those before you compare with a delivered retail price.
- Condition and provenance vary by lot. A low result can reflect a weak fill or label. Read the lot notes.
Even after those adjustments, the direction is consistent. For most To Kalon Cabernet, the auction market sets a lower and better-evidenced price than retail asks.
The exception: Schrader Old Sparky magnums
Old Sparky is Schrader's Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet sold in magnum. It is the most-traded To Kalon wine in our data: 2,182 lots all time and 682 in the last three years, almost all 1.5 L.
On a per-magnum basis, the auction median over the last three years is $1,135 (660 lots). The median US retail ask is $839 (123 offers). Across 12 matched vintages, every one sold above the US ask, with a median ratio of 1.26.
Format matters as much as the vineyard. A buyer who prices Old Sparky from 750 ml To Kalon comparables, or from the general retail discount, will underbid.
Vintage by vintage: Paul Hobbs Beckstoffer To Kalon
Paul Hobbs is one of the longest To Kalon series in our auction data, with 21 vintages that have five or more sales on record. The table shows vintages with at least 10 sales on record.

| 2019 | 29 | 20 | $248 | Oct 11, 2026 | $720 (10) | 0.34 |
Two patterns stand out. First, auction prices barely track age. The 2001 and the 2019 both clear in the $230 to $250 range. Second, the 2002 and 2013 trade at a clear premium to their neighbors, at $366 and $357. Those are the vintages where buyers pay for the year, not just the label.
Retail asks run highest on recent vintages. The 2019 has the widest gap in the table: a $720 median ask against a $248 auction median.
Have To Kalon auction prices moved?
To test direction, we compared the same wine and vintage across two windows: November 5, 2020 to November 4, 2023, and November 5, 2023 to November 4, 2026. We kept the 185 wine-vintage pairs with at least five sales in each window. Together they cover 28 wines.
The median change is −11% in nominal US dollars. 152 of the 185 pairs sold lower in the recent window. The middle half of pairs fell between 3% and 16%.
| Wine | Vintages compared | Median change |
|---|---|---|
| Paul Hobbs Beckstoffer To Kalon | 18 | −14% |
| Schrader Old Sparky | 18 | −14% |
| Schrader CCS | 16 | −13% |
| Schrader T6 | 14 | −12% |
| Schrader RBS | 15 | −11% |
| Schrader To Kalon Vineyard | 17 | −10% |
| Realm Beckstoffer To Kalon | 13 | −10% |
| Cliff Lede Beckstoffer To Kalon | 6 | −4% |
| TOR Beckstoffer To Kalon | 8 | −2% |
| Robert Mondavi The Reserve To Kalon | 7 | +13% |
Mondavi's Reserve is the only large series that rose. It is also the cheapest of the group at auction.
Trading volume rose over the same period. Wine Labs recorded 1,050 sold To Kalon lots in 2019, 2,160 in 2025, and 2,223 in 2026 through November 3. Part of that growth reflects wider auction coverage: the number of houses in the data rose from 11 in 2019 to 28 in 2026. Do not read the lot count alone as a demand signal.
In the last three years, K&L Wines (1,991 lots), Acker (872), Spectrum (721), WineBid (673), Zachys (601) and Brentwood (558) handled most To Kalon sales.
Beckstoffer, Mondavi and the rest
Grouped by fruit source, the price tiers are clear. This table covers red wines only and leaves out Old Sparky because it trades in magnum, so the Beckstoffer row has 64 wines.
| Group | Wines in catalog | US retail median (offers) | Auction median, 3 yr (lots) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beckstoffer To Kalon bottlings | 64 | $375 (1,953) | $228 (4,353) |
| Mondavi and To Kalon Vineyard Co. | 7 | $215 (553) | $133 (451) |
| Other To Kalon designates | 7 | $494 (575) | $234 (723) |
The "other" group is mostly Schrader's non-Beckstoffer bottlings, such as To Kalon Vineyard, MB Monastery Block, Heritage Clone and TKS. These carry the highest retail asks of any group. Their auction prices sit with the Beckstoffer wines.
Mondavi's bottlings are the entry point to the vineyard at auction, at a median of $133.
How to value a To Kalon bottle
- Identify the exact wine. Producer, cuvée and fruit source first. A Beckstoffer To Kalon from one winery is a different wine from another winery's bottling.
- Confirm the format. Old Sparky trades on a magnum market. Do not price it from 750 ml comparables.
- Use auction results for the same vintage. Look for at least five sales in the last three years. Our data has that depth for most large Schrader, Paul Hobbs, Realm and Mondavi vintages.
- Treat retail asks as a ceiling, not a value. For 750 ml To Kalon Cabernet, auction results have run at a median 62% of the US ask.
- Adjust for the costs that the auction figure leaves out. Add tax, shipping and storage, and check the condition notes on each lot.
- Check direction. On a like-for-like basis, most To Kalon Cabernet sold about 11% lower in the last three years than in the three before.

Data methodology: Wine Labs snapshot taken November 4, 2026. "To Kalon-designated" means a wine whose canonical name contains "To Kalon"; each producer's bottling is a separate wine. Retail figures use live offers in Wine Labs' current merchant and wine-shop feeds, 750 ml only (Old Sparky: 1.5 L), with auction-listed offers removed and one price (the lowest) per seller, wine and vintage. Auction figures use sold lots (realised price above zero) with outliers and mixed lots removed, duplicate lot records collapsed, and the price expressed per 750 ml-equivalent including buyer's premium. "Three years" means sales from November 5, 2023 to November 4, 2026. Matched comparisons require at least three US retail offers and five auction sales for the same wine and vintage. All prices are nominal US dollars. Counts can change as sources update and matching improves.
