South African Chenin Blanc Prices and Styles in 2026

843 South African Chenin Blanc wines priced across 101 countries: region, producer and old-vine price bands, Loire comparison and auction results.

South African Chenin Blanc is the most planted grape in the Cape, but it is not one product with one price. On 4 November 2026, Wine Labs tracked 843 South African Chenin Blanc wines with a live 750 ml retail price, offered by 5,977 sellers in 101 countries. The median seller price was $17.00. The top tenth of prices started at $47.97. The most expensive wine with at least 20 sellers had a median of $187.99.

That spread is the story. A $9 supermarket Steen and a $190 single-vineyard bottling from Stellenbosch share a grape and a country. Region, producer, vine age and the market where you buy explain most of the gap.

The supply side explains part of this. South Africa grew 15,949 hectares of Chenin Blanc in 2025, equal to 18.6% of national vineyard area, according to the Wines of South Africa statistics page. Yet Chenin Blanc Association research found that Chenin made up only 5% of domestic bottled single-varietal white-wine sales in 2020. A large vineyard with modest home demand pushes most bottles into the value tier and into export.

Three points stand out.

  • The home market is the cheapest. The South African median of $8.95 is about half the US median. South African sellers also list the widest range: 496 wines.
  • The UK has the deepest premium shelf. UK sellers list 431 wines, and the 75th percentile reaches $35.53. That is where many single-vineyard Swartland and Stellenbosch bottlings are sold.
  • Asia-Pacific prices sit highest. Hong Kong and Singapore medians are above $39. Their lists lean toward premium producers, so the higher median reflects mix as much as markup.

The US has by far the most sellers (2,584) but a narrower list (349 wines). American shelves carry many stores selling the same value labels.

Regions: Swartland and Stellenbosch set the benchmark

Wine Labs maps each wine to its most specific stated region. Many bottles carry only a broad appellation such as Western Cape or Coastal Region. Those are usually multi-site blends.

Citrusdal Mountain6225$36.97$88.31

Stellenbosch has the most wines. Its median of $17.06 is close to the national figure because it mixes everyday estate whites with barrel-fermented flagships.

Swartland is more expensive at every point of the distribution. Its median is $22.39 and its 75th percentile is $39.11. This is the home of the dry-farmed bush-vine movement, and its list is shorter and more premium.

Broad appellations are the value tier. Wines labelled only Western Cape or Coastal Region have medians near $13. Robertson is the cheapest named district, at $12.19.

Small mountain districts carry the highest prices. Citrusdal Mountain and Piekenierskloof have only a few wines each, but those wines are old-vine single-site bottlings. Their 75th percentiles exceed $80.

The most widely listed South African Chenin Blanc wines

These wines have the broadest retail reach in the Wine Labs data. Chains count once per country, so one supermarket group cannot inflate the count with hundreds of stores.

The premium end: old vines and single sites

Swartland supplies seven of the twelve. The same producers also make the widely listed wines above: Mullineux's Kloof Street sells at $21.92, and its Iron sells at $96.99. A producer's name does not price the bottle. The cuvée does.

Old vine on the label: what the premium looks like

South Africa's old vines are a small part of its vineyard. The South African Journal of Enology and Viticulture old vine study records 3,693 hectares registered as old-vine vineyards in 2020, with about half planted to Chenin Blanc. The same study puts 64% of Chenin Blanc plantings at under 20 years old. The Old Vine Project certifies vineyards that are 35 years or older.

Wine Labs compared wines whose names carry an old-vine claim ("Old Vine", "Oude", "Ouwingerd", "Old Bush") with all other South African Chenin Blanc.

GroupWinesSeller-wine prices25th pctMedian75th pct
Old-vine claim in name441,827$17.99$24.97$59.40
No old-vine claim79917,050$11.37$16.49$25.48

The median premium is about 50%. The upper quartile more than doubles. But the claim alone does not set the price. In Swartland, old-vine-named wines had a median of $25.14 against $21.99 for the rest. In Stellenbosch the gap was wider: $35.75 against $16.56. Many of the most expensive old-vine wines, such as the Sadie Family series, do not put "old vine" on the front label at all, so this test understates the real premium.

A buyer should ask for the planting year, the farming method (dry farmed or irrigated), and whether the vineyard is registered. A name is not proof of any of these.

South African Chenin Blanc vs Loire Chenin Blanc

The Loire is the grape's home and the natural price reference. Wine Labs ran the same method on Loire Chenin Blanc.

Across all markets, the Loire median is 1.8 times the South African median. The gap holds when you compare the two inside the same market:

Germany$28.26$14.59$70.66$37.06
Netherlands$27.62$13.89$74.12$39.13

In every market, South African Chenin costs about half to two thirds of the Loire price, at the median and at the top decile. For buyers, that is the category's main value argument. A $40 Swartland bottle sits near the South African 90th percentile. In the Loire, $40 is closer to the middle of the shelf.

Auction results are thin

South African Chenin Blanc rarely goes to auction. Wine Labs holds 358 single-wine lots since 2004, across 105 wines and 28 auction houses. In the last two years there were 178 lots of 71 wines, with a median of $77.51 per 750 ml equivalent, buyer's premium included.

Only two wines had five or more 750 ml lots in that window. Both trade below their retail median:

WineAuction lots (Nov 2024 to Oct 2026)Auction medianRetail medianRetail sellers
Sadie Family 'Mev. Kirsten'26$144.52$187.99125
Sadie Family 'Skurfberg'18$102.46$112.9480

Auction volume is growing. There were 111 lots in 2026 to date against 61 in 2025. Median lot prices rose too, but that reflects a shift toward premium wines, not price growth for a given bottle. Mullineux's 'Olerasay' had 17 lots at a $248.93 median, the highest of any wine with repeated sales.

The practical reading: for most South African Chenin, retail is the only real price signal. For the top Sadie bottlings, auction gives a second reference, and it currently sits 9% to 23% below retail.

Supply has shrunk since 2015

The vineyard behind these prices is getting smaller. The Wines of South Africa Chenin history document records that Chenin, long known locally as Steen, was formally identified in 1963. It has been the most planted cultivar since varietal records began in 1974, and peaked at 30,680 hectares in 1989. Growers then replaced it with red and international varieties. Area fell to 19,148 hectares in 2004 and 17,103 hectares in 2019.

Farmer's Weekly reports a further fall from 17,965 hectares in 2015 to 15,912 hectares in 2024. The WOSA figure for 2025, 15,949 hectares, suggests the fall has paused for now. The pull-out removed mostly young, high-yield blocks. The older dryland parcels that survived became the raw material for the wines in the premium table above.

Fewer hectares do not lift every price. The value tier is still large, and 41% of seller prices remain under $15. Scarcity applies to registered old vineyards and small single-site allocations, not to the category.

Style also moves the price

Winemaking choices change both the wine and its position on the shelf. A controlled skin contact study in the same journal used one batch of grapes and found that skin contact reduced terpenes, esters, acids and thiols and increased alcohols and phenolic compounds. The effect was stronger with full fermentation on skins. A skin-contact premium pays for texture, not for fresh fruit.

How to price the next bottle

  1. Match the exact wine. Producer, cuvée and vintage. A producer's entry wine and its single-vineyard wine can differ by a factor of four.
  2. Compare within one market. A Hong Kong price and a Cape Town price are not comparable without the local tax and freight.
  3. Use region as a first band. Broad appellations sit near $13, Stellenbosch near $17 and Swartland near $22 at the median.
  4. Check the old-vine claim. Ask for the planting year and farming method before you pay the premium.
  5. Use auction only where it exists. For most wines there is no auction record. For Sadie Family wines, the auction median is a useful floor.

Data methodology: Wine Labs current retail offers (online merchants and physical wine shops), snapshot taken 4 November 2026. Each listing is its most recent observation; merchant listings were observed between 30 June and 4 November 2026, shop listings between 18 February and 4 November 2026. Wines are South African Chenin Blanc in the Wine Labs catalogue (grape Chenin Blanc, region in South Africa, still and sparkling wine). Prices are 750 ml bottles converted to USD. To stop one large retailer dominating, each wine has one price per seller (the median of that seller's listings), and every store of a chain counts as one seller per country. Percentiles are exact; groups with fewer than 20 seller-wine prices are omitted. Old-vine groups use wine names only. Auction figures use completed single-wine lots, exclude mixed lots and flagged outliers, and report realised price including buyer's premium per 750 ml equivalent. Loire figures use the same method.
