Silver Oak makes two Cabernet Sauvignons from two valleys: one from Napa Valley and one from Alexander Valley in Sonoma County. This post is about the Alexander Valley wine. Silver Oak ages its Cabernet only in American oak (Silver Oak), and the barrels come from The Oak, a Missouri cooperage the winery has fully owned since 2015 (Silver Oak).
Below is what the winery has published about the wine and its vintages, and what it sells for today in shops, at auction and on restaurant lists. Blend figures come from the winery's own product sheets. The prices come from Wine Labs data collected on November 4, 2026.

How Silver Oak began
Ray Duncan bought his first land in Alexander Valley in 1970, a 100-acre property called Los Amigos Vineyard. In 1972 he bought a dairy property in Oakville and offered winemaker Justin Meyer an equal partnership, with Meyer in charge of the wine. The business was first called Duncan-Meyer and took the Silver Oak name in 1975. The first North Coast vintage was released in 1977 for $6 a bottle, and the first Napa Valley vintage followed in 1979 (Silver Oak history).
Meyer retired in 2001 and sold his share to the Duncan family. Ray Duncan's sons, Tim and David Duncan, are the second generation of the family in the business (Silver Oak).
Who makes the wine
Silver Oak has had four winemakers, with overlapping tenures: Justin Meyer (1972 to 2001), Daniel Baron (1994 to 2016), Nate Weis (2014 to 2025) and Laura Oskwarek, winemaker since 2025 (Silver Oak).
The wine is blended before it goes into barrel, so the blend is chosen on the vineyard lots before the oak has any effect (2016 product sheet). It then ages for 24 months in American oak, half new and half used once, and rests in bottle before release: 15 months for the 2015 (2015 product sheet) and 14 months for the 2021 (2021 product sheet). The winery says it holds its wines in bottle longer than almost any other California winery (Silver Oak).
The barrels come from The Oak, a cooperage in Higbee, Missouri. Silver Oak fully acquired it in 2015 and says it was the first winery to own and run an American oak cooperage (Silver Oak).
Where the fruit comes from
Silver Oak lists five vineyards in Alexander Valley. The Alexander Valley Estate Vineyard, around the winery near the south end of the valley, was bought in 2012 and replanted from 2012 to 2014. Miraval (bought in 1987) and Red Tail (bought in 1988) lie near the Russian River in the south of the valley. Crazy Creek was added in 2016 and Big River, near Fitch Mountain, in 2017 (Silver Oak vineyards).
The 2017 was the first vintage from the new Alexander Valley winery, which is LEED Platinum and Living Building certified (2017 product sheet).
Silver Oak Alexander Valley vintages and blends
The winery publishes a product sheet for every vintage from 2012 to 2021 (Silver Oak downloads). Cabernet Sauvignon has made up 94.6% to 98% of the wine. The rest is a small and changing mix of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.

Release day is always early August, almost four years after harvest. Alcohol has crept up: it ranged from 13.8% to 14.3% between 2012 and 2017, and has been 14.4% to 14.6% since 2018.
