Rombauer Chardonnay Price: 2026 Retail and Channel Guide
Rombauer Carneros Chardonnay at 6,969 sellers: prices by channel, grocery chain, format and vintage, plus restaurant and auction data.
Rombauer Carneros Chardonnay is one of the most widely sold Chardonnays in the United States. On November 4, 2026, Wine Labs found a live 750 ml price for it at 6,969 sellers: 692 online merchants, 2,733 wine and liquor shops, and 3,544 grocery stores. The median price was $44.78, and half of all sellers asked between $39.99 and $46.99.
This guide sets out what the winery publishes about the wine, and what it costs today by channel, chain, format and vintage. Every price comes from Wine Labs data. One price is counted per seller, so a chain with many store pages does not set the result alone.

The wine
Koerner and Joan Rombauer founded Rombauer Vineyards in St. Helena in 1980. The winery crushed its first Chardonnay in August 1982. Its first releases, in 1984, were the 1980 Cabernet Sauvignon and the 1982 Chardonnay, each with a suggested retail price of $12.50 (Rombauer, Our Story).
The Carneros bottling came later. In 1990 Rombauer bought its first Chardonnay grapes from Carneros, the start of its partnership with the Sangiacomo family (Rombauer, Our Story). Richie Allen joined as a harvest intern in 2004 and became head winemaker in 2008 (same source).
In August 2023, E. & J. Gallo's Luxury Wine Group announced that it had acquired Rombauer Vineyards. The deal included the brand, three winery and production facilities, two tasting rooms and over 700 acres of vineyards (Gallo press release, August 29, 2023).

The 2023 sheet lists 35% new oak, 14.6% alcohol and an August 2024 release (2023 fact sheet). The winery's page for the 2025 vintage lists 33% new oak and 14.6% alcohol (Rombauer, Carneros Chardonnay).
Rombauer also makes a Proprietor Selection Chardonnay and single-vineyard Chardonnays such as Buchli Station and Home Ranch. These are separate wines with separate prices. They are not part of the Carneros figures in this guide.

Total Wine shows one price level across its stores. Delivery-app prices are listed through a delivery service, so they are a different purchase from a shelf price.

Most sellers in our data are in the United States. Among merchants and wine shops, the US median is $42.99 across 3,089 sellers. The United Kingdom has 221 sellers with a median of $44.78. Canada (28 sellers, $50.70) and Japan (14 sellers, $52.76) list it at higher prices. All prices are converted to US dollars.

Rombauer Carneros Chardonnay comes in half bottles, standard bottles, magnums and larger sizes. To compare them, the table shows the median price per 750 ml of wine and the equivalent price for the whole bottle.

The magnum has the lowest price per 750 ml in our data, about 21% below the standard bottle. Half bottles cost slightly more per 750 ml. The 3 litre size costs more per 750 ml than the magnum. The 1 litre listings come almost entirely from Costco.
Price by vintage
Most retail and grocery listings do not state a vintage, so this table covers only the offers that do. Vintages with fewer than 20 sellers are not shown.

The vintages sell at similar prices. Older bottles do not carry a clear premium at retail. The 2025 vintage had just started to appear, at 10 sellers.
Proprietor Selection Chardonnay
The Proprietor Selection Chardonnay is a separate, higher-priced wine. Across 423 sellers, its median 750 ml price was $83.99, with half of sellers between $78.99 and $88.99. It appears on 44 restaurant lists in our data, at a median of $160 a bottle.
We left out DoorDash listings for this wine. DoorDash lists 1,180 offers titled "Rombauer Proprietor Chardonnay" at a median of $50.59. That is the same price level as the Carneros bottling on DoorDash ($50.39), so we could not confirm which wine those listings sell.
Restaurants
The Carneros Chardonnay is on 1,975 US restaurant wine lists in our data. The median bottle price is $84, and half of lists price it between $70 and $99. That is about 1.95 times the US retail median of $42.99. On 447 lists it is also sold by the glass, at a median of $24 a glass (half between $20 and $30).

Auctions
Rombauer Chardonnay rarely sells at auction. Wine Labs has 126 single-wine lots of the Carneros Chardonnay since 2003, at 12 auction houses. Of those, 67 have a recorded sale price. In the last five years, 58 lots sold at a median of $29.25 per bottle, buyer's premium included, across 10 houses.
An auction result and a retail price measure different things. A retail price is an asking price for a bottle in stock, mostly of the current vintage. An auction price is the result for one lot, often an older vintage, with the buyer's premium but before shipping and tax. Read how to compare auction prices before you put the two side by side.
Buying from the winery
Rombauer's Joy of Chardonnay Club ships three times a year. A 4-bottle shipment costs $135 to $145, and a 12-bottle shipment costs $450 to $480, plus tax and shipping in both cases. The winery says customization changes the price (Rombauer, Wine Clubs).
That works out to $33.75 to $36.25 a bottle for the 4-bottle shipment and $37.50 to $40.00 for the 12-bottle shipment, before tax and shipping. The winery says the 12-bottle option also includes limited-production Chardonnays, so not every bottle is the Carneros wine.
From $12.50 to today
The 1982 Chardonnay was released at a suggested $12.50. Today's median 750 ml price for the Carneros Chardonnay is $44.78, about 3.6 times higher in nominal terms. This is not a like-for-like series. The 1982 wine came from different fruit, before the Carneros bottling began in 1990, and the comparison does not adjust for inflation.
How to use these numbers
- Compare the same format. Price per 750 ml shows that a half bottle is not the lower-cost way to buy the wine, and that a magnum is.
- Check the channel. Total Wine, grocery chains and delivery apps sit at different price levels for the same bottle.
- Check the wine. Carneros, Proprietor Selection and the single-vineyard wines are different products. Confirm the name before you compare prices.
- Check the vintage when it matters. Most listings do not state one.

Prices are in US dollars, converted at current rates, and expressed per 750 ml unless stated. We took one median price per seller (per store for grocery chains and Total Wine), then took percentiles across sellers. Format figures use each seller's price per 750 ml for that format. Vintage figures use only offers that state a vintage. Restaurant figures use one median bottle or glass price per US restaurant, with flagged outliers removed; lists with no stated format are counted as bottles.
