Henschke Hill of Grace: the Eden Valley vineyard and family behind it, plus live prices from 271 shops, 11,727 auction sales and 448 restaurants.

Hill of Grace is a single-vineyard Shiraz from Henschke, the family winery at Keyneton in South Australia's Eden Valley. Cyril Henschke made the first one in 1958, from Shiraz vines at the Hill of Grace Vineyard that were up to 100 years old at the time (Henschke).

Below is what the winery says about the vineyard and the family, and what the wine sells for today in shops, at auction and on restaurant lists. The prices come from Wine Labs data collected on November 4, 2026.

Who makes Hill of Grace

Johann Christian Henschke came to South Australia from Kutschlau in Silesia in 1841. He planted a small vineyard in the Eden Valley in the early 1860s, and the first recorded sale of Henschke wine was in 1868. The second generation, Paul Gotthard Henschke, bought land with a small planting of vines near the Gnadenberg Church in 1891 (Henschke).

Cyril Henschke, the fourth generation, took over the winery in 1950. The family history credits him as a pioneer of single-variety and single-vineyard wines from the mid-1950s (Henschke). His son Stephen took over the winemaking from him in 1979 (Henschke). Prue Henschke is the viticulturist. Johann Henschke, of the sixth generation, works as a winemaker and viticulturist, after a degree in viticulture and oenology from the University of Adelaide in 2005 and a master's in Geisenheim in 2012 (Henschke).

Where the fruit comes from

The Hill of Grace Vineyard is 4 km north-west of the winery, at 400 m in the Mount Lofty Ranges east of the Barossa Valley. The name is a translation of Gnadenberg, after the Lutheran church the villagers of Parrot Hill built there in 1860 (Henschke).

The winery's fact list gives the vineyard as 8 hectares, of which 4 are Shiraz. The rest is planted to Riesling, Semillon and Mataro. The soil is alluvial sandy loam over clay. The oldest vines, called the Grandfathers, were planted by Nicolaus Stanitzki around the 1860s. They are dry-grown, more than 155 years old and low yielding because of their age. The vineyard is farmed with organic and biodynamic methods (Henschke).

We could not find technical sheets for a run of past Hill of Grace vintages on Henschke's website, so we don't list oak or alcohol by vintage here.

What Hill of Grace costs today

On November 4, 2026, 271 sellers had Hill of Grace on offer in a 750 ml bottle, counting each chain once. These prices don't measure the same thing. Shop prices mix many vintages and countries. Auction prices are what one lot sold for, with the buyer's premium but before shipping, tax and storage. Most recorded Hill of Grace sales are at Langtons in Australia. A restaurant price includes service.

The gap between shops and auctions is wide. For vintages with at least 17 shop sellers, shops ask $706 to $948, while the same vintages sold at auction for medians of $374 to $565. The 1990 has the highest shop median, at $948. The 2012 and the 2021 have the highest auction medians in the table, at $565 each.
