8 Fruity Wine Types: Tasting Notes, Pairings and Prices

Live prices for 8 fruity wine types from 1.34M retail listings: Moscato d'Asti to New World Pinot Noir, with medians, regions and top-listed wines.

"Something fruity" covers a sweet Piedmont sparkler, a dry Marlborough white and a 15% Californian red. Those wines do not share a price, a sweetness level or a food job. This guide puts live Wine Labs retail data on eight fruity wine types so you can see what each one actually costs before you recommend it.

The data comes from 1,342,216 wine-by-seller listings for 21,544 wines, offered by 36,199 sellers (12,490 online merchants and 23,709 physical stores). We took the snapshot on November 4, 2026. Prices are per standard 750 ml bottle in USD.

Fruit is a popular request. In a survey of 1,072 U.S. wine consumers, 58% described fruity wines as favorites, 57% preferred semi-sweet wines and 56% preferred smooth wines, according to research in Beverages. Those answers overlap, but they are not the same request. Ripe fruit aroma can sit in a fully dry wine.

Fruity wine types compared by live retail price

Each wine counts once. We take the median price across the sellers that list it, then take the median across wines in the style. The range is the 25th to 75th percentile of those wine-level prices.

Region figures use the most specific region on the wine record and need at least 20 wines with live listings. Generic labels such as "California" or "New Zealand" are left out of the region columns.

Three points stand out:

  • The sweet styles are the cheap ones. Moscato d'Asti and Lambrusco sit at about $15. Sweetness does not carry a premium at retail.
  • Dry fruit-forward reds cost the most. New World Pinot Noir has a median of $36.99 and the widest spread. A quarter of its wines list at $60 or more.
  • The region gap is the real price driver. Within Pinot Noir, the median moves from $10.13 to $80.00 by region. Within NZ Sauvignon Blanc, it moves only $2.40.

1. Moscato d'Asti

Moscato d'Asti is a lightly sparkling (frizzante), sweet white DOCG wine from Piedmont, made from Moscato Bianco. It is low in alcohol. Expect peach, apricot and orange blossom.

MeasureValue
Median / 750 ml$15.99
Middle 50%$12.99–$18.99
Wines / sellers417 / 15,491

The range is the tightest of the eight styles. Half of all Moscato d'Asti wines list between $12.99 and $18.99. Every wine in the set comes from the one DOCG, so there is no regional spread to compare.

Most widely listed:

  1. Il Conte 'Stella Rosa' Moscato d'Asti DOCG: 6,112 sellers, $14.83
  2. Risata Moscato d'Asti DOCG: 4,105 sellers, $16.39
  3. Cupcake Vineyards Moscato d'Asti DOCG: 3,609 sellers, $13.99

Gancia, one of the historic Asti houses, lists at a median of $12.73 across 431 sellers. The famous name sits below the style median.

Low alcohol is part of the appeal and part of the limit. A survey of 234 consumers who tasted grape and other fruit wines found the highest acceptance between about 8% and 15% ABV, as reported in Foods via PMC. Moscato d'Asti often falls below that band. Serve it well chilled with fruit desserts.

2. Off-dry Riesling

German Kabinett and Spätlese Riesling balance residual sugar with high acidity. Green apple, peach and lime lead. Our set covers German Riesling labelled Kabinett or Spätlese and excludes wines marked trocken, halbtrocken, feinherb or GG.

MeasureValue
Median / 750 ml$27.23

Wines / sellers1,247 / 8,142
Kabinett median$23.23 (581 wines)
Spätlese median$32.23 (666 wines)

The Prädikat is worth about $9 at the median. Do not file a Kabinett and a Spätlese from the same producer as one product.

Most widely listed:

  1. Moselland Riesling Kabinett: 880 sellers, $8.83
  2. Dr. Loosen Blue Slate Riesling Kabinett: 693 sellers, $21.99
  3. Ruppertsberger Nussbien Riesling Kabinett: 456 sellers, $8.10

By region, Rheinhessen is the lowest at $15.70 and Mosel sits at $21.42. Single villages go higher: Graach $36.99, Rüdesheim $35.99 and Hattenheim $45.22.

Producer matters more than the grape. Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr lists at $65.84 for Kabinett, $80.20 for Spätlese and $99.99 for Auslese. That Kabinett costs almost three times the Kabinett median.

3. Gewürztraminer

Gewürztraminer gives lychee, rose petal and ginger. Alsace is the reference. Many bottles are slightly off-dry, and the body is richer than Riesling.

MeasureValue
Median / 750 ml$21.99
Middle 50%$15.39–$31.96
Wines / sellers2,030 / 13,219
Alsace median$24.99 (606 wines)

Most widely listed:

  1. Fetzer Valley Oaks Gewürztraminer (California): 2,098 sellers, $9.76
  2. Chateau Ste. Michelle Gewürztraminer (Columbia Valley): 2,010 sellers, $11.99
  3. F E Trimbach Gewürztraminer (Alsace): 1,123 sellers, $28.99

The two most listed wines are American and cost less than half of the Alsace median. German Gewürztraminer is the lowest-priced source: Rheinhessen $13.99 and Pfalz $15.05.

Late-harvest bottlings are a separate product. Trimbach's standard Gewürztraminer lists at $28.99. Its Vendanges Tardives lists at $51.99 and its Sélection de Grains Nobles at $139.99. Domaine Weinbach's 'Les Treilles du Loup' lists at $42.99. Keep these tiers on separate price lines.

4. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is what most guests mean by "crisp and fruity." It is almost always dry. Passionfruit, gooseberry and lime lead.

MeasureValue
Median / 750 ml$15.68
Middle 50%$12.49–$19.99
Wines / sellers1,313 / 24,037
Marlborough median$15.59 (977 wines)

This is the most widely stocked white in the set. It reaches 24,037 sellers, close to Pinot Noir, with one-ninth of the wines.

Most widely listed:

  1. Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc: 11,619 sellers, $14.96
  2. Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc: 10,409 sellers, $16.99
  3. Matua Valley Sauvignon Blanc: 8,445 sellers, $13.99

Cloudy Bay is the outlier. It lists at $34.99 across 6,727 sellers, more than double the style median. The regional spread is small: Marlborough $15.59, Nelson $15.62, Hawke's Bay $15.77 and Waipara Valley $17.99. Producer, not sub-region, sets the price here.

Much of the fruit comes from fermentation. The Australian Wine Research Institute lists aroma thresholds of about 14 micrograms per litre for ethyl hexanoate (apple peel, pineapple) and 20 micrograms per litre for ethyl butyrate (apple).

5. Beaujolais (Gamay)

Beaujolais is light-bodied Gamay with cherry, raspberry and often banana. The AWRI ties the banana note to isoamyl acetate and notes that lower fermentation temperatures can raise it.

  2. Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau: 1,434 sellers, $15.99
  3. Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages: 1,156 sellers, $15.11

One house does not always follow the ladder. Duboeuf's Fleurie lists at $14.55, below its Beaujolais-Villages, while its Domaine Jean-Ernest Descombes Morgon lists at $28.97. Nouveau is a dated release, not a cellar style. Keep old Nouveau stock out of any cru average.

6. California Zinfandel

California Zinfandel is the bold end of the fruity range. Expect blackberry, jammy raspberry and black pepper, with high alcohol. The fruit is ripe, but the wine is usually dry.

Our figures cover red Zinfandel only. White Zinfandel is a different product: Sutter Home The Original White Zinfandel (4,845 sellers, $7.99) and Barefoot White Zinfandel (4,369 sellers, $8.25) would top the list if we included it.

  2. Bogle Vineyards Old Vines Zinfandel: 4,403 sellers, $11.99
  3. Gnarly Head 'Old Vine Zin' (Lodi): 3,204 sellers, $11.49

"Old vine" on the label does not set the price. The site does. Lodi has a median of $17.49 and Paso Robles $27.99. Dry Creek Valley reaches $37.99, Napa Valley $44.44, Russian River Valley $48.99, Rockpile $54.95 and Howell Mountain $68.00.

Producer and vineyard move the price further. Turley Juvenile lists at $29.99 and Turley Old Vines at $34.99. Its single-vineyard Hayne bottling lists at $89.99. Ridge Lytton Springs ($55.99) and Ridge Geyserville ($54.00) are Zinfandel-led field blends. Our records file them as blends, so they sit outside the style median.

Do not let "jammy" turn into a sweetness claim. TTB Ruling 82-4 bars terms such as "Late Harvest" on wine that is made from concentrate, or that is ameliorated, sweetened or fortified.

7. Lambrusco

Lambrusco is a family of sparkling reds from Emilia-Romagna, with cherry, raspberry and violet notes. Sweetness runs from dry (secco) through amabile to sweet (dolce).

MeasureValue
Median / 750 ml$14.99
Middle 50%$10.39–$20.21
Wines / sellers574 / 12,071

Lambrusco has the lowest median of the eight styles. Sweetness, as stated on the label, tracks price:

  3. Lini 910 'Labrusca' Lambrusco Rosso Reggiano: 844 sellers, $18.69

The named zones cost more than the broad IGT. Emilia IGT has a median of $13.68, Grasparossa di Castelvetro $16.00 and Sorbara $18.00. Medici Ermete's Concerto lists at $17.75 across 819 sellers, while its i Quercioli Secco lists at $13.99. Split secco and dolce on the list, and split the grape where the label names it.

8. New World Pinot Noir

New World Pinot Noir from Central Otago, the Willamette Valley and coastal California gives cherry, red berry and spice with moderate tannin. It is dry.

MeasureValue

  2. Bread & Butter Pinot Noir: 7,387 sellers, $16.97
  3. Josh Cellars Pinot Noir: 6,903 sellers, $17.99

All three carry a broad California appellation and list below the style median. The reference producers sit well above it. Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir lists at $49.99 and its Laurène at $79.20. Felton Road Bannockburn lists at $57.83 and its single-block Calvert at $72.88.

How to choose between fruity wine types

Ask one question first: does the guest want sugar, perfume or ripe fruit in a dry wine?

  • Sugar: Moscato d'Asti or a dolce Lambrusco. Both cost about $11–$16 at the median.
  • Perfume with some sweetness: Kabinett Riesling ($23.23) or Gewürztraminer ($21.99).
  • Dry and crisp: New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc ($15.68).
  • Light red: Beaujolais, from $16.09 for Nouveau to $27.94 for Moulin-à-Vent.
  • Silky red: New World Pinot Noir, from a $12.64 median in Chile's Central Valley to $66.99 in the Dundee Hills.
  • Big red for the grill: red California Zinfandel ($29.99).

Then price against the right peer. In most styles, the most widely stocked wines list near or below the median, and the reference producers list well above it. A Prüm Kabinett against Moselland, or Cloudy Bay against Oyster Bay, is not a like-for-like comparison. Record producer, vineyard, Prädikat or cru, sweetness term and format as separate fields so new offers match the bottle you hold.

Compare these prices by producer, vintage and seller in Wine Labs fine wine market data, find who stocks a wine with Explore Retailers, and match messy list names with the Wine Matching API.

Data methodology: Wine Labs live retail offers (online merchants and physical stores), snapshot taken November 4, 2026. We kept standard 750 ml bottles priced between $3 and $20,000 in USD and excluded multi-bottle packs. Each wine-seller pair counts once at its median price. Style medians are medians of wine-level medians across all vintages on offer; regional figures need at least 20 wines. Styles are defined from matched wine records: Moscato d'Asti DOCG; German Riesling labelled Kabinett or Spätlese, not trocken, halbtrocken, feinherb or GG; Gewürztraminer from any region; Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand; Gamay from Beaujolais; red Zinfandel from California (White Zinfandel, rosé, port-style and late-harvest wines excluded); Lambrusco; and still red Pinot Noir from the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Argentina and South Africa. US sellers make up 46% of the 36,199 sellers, so the medians lean toward US shelf prices. Seller prices may or may not include sales tax.
