Cote Du Py: A Guide to Morgon's Best-Known Hill and Its Prices

Morgon Côte du Py: verified site facts, live prices for 49 wines from 331 sellers, producer tables and 2,173 auction results.

Côte du Py is a hill inside the Morgon cru of Beaujolais. Wine from it is labelled "Morgon Côte du Py" (sometimes "Côte de Py"). Many growers and négociants bottle one, so the name on the label covers a group of different wines, not one product.

This guide gives the verified facts about the site and what Côte du Py wines cost today. The prices come from Wine Labs data collected on November 4, 2026: live retail offers for 49 Côte du Py wines from 331 sellers, and 2,173 auction lots with a recorded sale price.

What makes Côte du Py different within Morgon

Morgon's soils are mixed. The Beaujolais interprofession gives the split for the appellation as 52% granite, 11% blue stones and 37% piedmont soils. It describes Côte du Py as the appellation's best-known slope, dominated by Mont du Py and made of blue stones and decomposed schist (Beaujolais interprofession). French Wikipedia describes clay soils that come from manganese-rich schist, on a hill that rises to 358 metres (Wikipedia FR).

The appellation rules set the same yield limits for the whole of Morgon: 56 hl/ha, with a ceiling (rendement butoir) of 61 hl/ha. The actual average in 2023 was 51 hl/ha, on 57,126 hl of wine from 1,114 ha (Wikipedia FR). No separate rules exist for Côte du Py. Each producer's choices on yield, vine age and winemaking decide how its bottling differs.

Producer technical sheets show how varied those choices are. For example, Georges Duboeuf's Morgon Côte du Py sheet lists 10,000 vines per hectare, goblet pruning, selective picking and whole-bunch vatting in the traditional Beaujolais method (Duboeuf technical sheet). Other producers destem part of the harvest or age the wine in oak or concrete. Read the sheet for the producer and vintage you are looking at.

Côte du Py compared with other Morgon

The same data covers 211 other Morgon wines with a live price. Their median is $24.99, against $29.99 for Côte du Py.

A comparison inside the same producer is more useful, because it holds the producer's style and pricing constant. For 11 producers with at least five listings for both a Côte du Py wine and another Morgon, the Côte du Py bottling has a median price 1.2 times that of the producer's other Morgon. The ratio runs from 0.97 to 2.03.

Côte du Py producers and their prices

Each producer's Côte du Py is a separate wine. The table lists the wines with at least five live retail sellers. Several producers make more than one Côte du Py cuvée, for example an old-vine bottling or a single lieu-dit such as Javernières.

Morgon Côte du Py at auction

Wine Labs holds 2,173 sold Côte du Py lots, across 37 wines and 34 auction houses, from November 2005 to October 2026. The median is $38.58 per 750 ml, including the buyer's premium. In the last three years there were 1,199 lots, with a median of $40.08.

Auction activity has grown. The yearly count went from 34 lots in 2016 to 410 in 2025 and 507 so far in 2026, while the yearly median moved between $29 and $42. Part of that growth is wider coverage of auction houses in our data, not only more sales.

One wine accounts for close to half the lots: Domaine Jean Foillard's Côte du Py, with 979 lots.

Retail and auction measure different things

A retail price is an asking price for a bottle in stock, usually a recent vintage. An auction price is the result for one lot. It includes the buyer's premium but not shipping, tax or storage, and it depends on the lot's age, condition and provenance.

To compare like with like, we matched the same wine and vintage in both channels. That gave 20 pairs across 9 wines, using auction results from the last three years with at least three lots per vintage. The median auction result was 0.92 times the median retail price. Half of the pairs fell between 0.73 and 1.11, and 12 of the 20 auctioned below retail. The sample is small, so treat it as a guide, not a rule.

Using these numbers

  • Identify the wine first. Producer, cuvée and vintage matter more than the Côte du Py name. The same producer can make three or four Côte du Py wines at different prices.
  • Compare within a producer. The 1.2 times median premium over the same producer's other Morgon is a better guide than the gap between all Côte du Py and all Morgon.
  • Check the vintage. Retail medians pool vintages, and a wine with older stock on sale will show a higher median.
  • Read the auction lot. Bottle count, format and condition change the per-bottle result.

See live prices for a specific bottle in Wine Labs search, the Morgon region page, and our note on auction wine prices.

Data methodology: Wine Labs data, snapshot November 4, 2026. "Côte du Py wines" are catalogue wines whose name contains "Côte du Py", "Côte de Py", "Côtes du Py" or "Climat le Py". Wines named "Roche du Py" or "Cuvée du Py" are excluded. Retail uses live offers from online merchants and wine shops, single 750 ml bottles only, with one median price per wine per seller; a chain counts as one seller per country. Auction figures use lots with a positive realised price, buyer's premium included, normalised to 750 ml, with mixed lots and flagged outliers removed. Lots without an auction date use the sale date. All prices are in US dollars. Site facts come from the Beaujolais interprofession, French Wikipedia (citing customs data and the appellation rules) and producer technical sheets, as linked.
