Who founded Clos du Val
Clos du Val was founded in 1972 and is still family owned, now in its third generation (2023 fact sheet). The founder was John Goelet, who asked for "the best wine outside of Bordeaux". The site was chosen by the founding winemaker, Bernard Portet, after a two-year search across four continents (Clos du Val estate).
Portet, now Winemaker Emeritus, arrived in Napa in 1972. Today John Goelet's grandson Olav Goelet owns and runs the winery, and Carmel Greenberg is the winemaker (Clos du Val story).
Where the fruit comes from
The winery's estate is Hirondelle, which it describes as a cool, sheltered valley in the Stags Leap District that gets coastal winds every day (Clos du Val estate). Its farming is regenerative and guided by organic principles, with insectary rows, pollinator habitat and livestock in the vineyard (Clos du Val farming).
The Napa Valley Cabernet is not limited to the estate. The winery says estate vineyards beyond the Stags Leap District also go into its Napa Valley wines, without naming the sources for this one (Clos du Val wines). The winery's Stags Leap District estate wines are separate bottlings: an Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($150 for the 2023), Yettalil ($200) and an Estate Cabernet Franc ($125) (Clos du Val wines).
The two most recent vintages
The winery publishes fact sheets for the 2022 and 2023 on its trade page. That is too few for a vintage table, but the two sheets show the style. Both are blends of five Bordeaux grapes, both spent 12 months in French oak with 30% new barrels, and both carry a Napa Valley appellation.
| Vintage | Blend | Barrels | Alcohol | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 5% Malbec, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot | 12 months, 30% new French oak | 14.2% | Fact sheet |
| 2023 | 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec, 4% Petit Verdot | 12 months, 30% new French oak | 14.5% | Fact sheet |
The 2023 harvest ran from September 28 to November 2, after a cool, wet season. The 2022 was picked from September 1 to October 25, through an early September heat wave.

| Channel | Price | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Shops | $59 | Median of 1,125 sellers, all vintages |
| Winery, 2023 release | $60 | closduval.com list price |
| Auction | $60 | Median of 540 sales, buyer's premium included |
| Restaurants | $109 | Median of 434 wine lists |
These four prices don't measure the same thing. The winery price is for the current release. Shop prices mix recent and older vintages. Auction prices are what one lot sold for, with the buyer's premium but before shipping, tax and storage. A restaurant price includes service.
By vintage, the 2022 is the most widely stocked (152 sellers, median $55), then the 2023 (115 sellers, $50). Only three vintages have both five shop sellers and five auction sales. For the 2022, the auction median is $41, below the shop median.

At auction
We have 540 sales with a recorded price, at 27 auction houses, from October 2002 to November 2026. K&L Wines (149 lots) and Spectrum (134) account for the most, followed by Winebid (47) and Langtons (46). Half of all sales fall between $42 and $108, a wide range for one wine.
The range is wide because the oldest bottles sell for far more than recent ones. The 1972, the first vintage, has 10 recorded sales at a median of $302. The 1974 is the most traded vintage, with 76 sales at a median of $146, and the 1978 has 35 sales at $132. Every vintage from 1993 on with a quoted median sold for $36 to $68.
The yearly median moves a lot, from $48 in 2019 to $126 in 2022, a year with only 16 sales. Since 2023 it has stayed between $59 and $70.
