The Hope family in Paso Robles

The Hopes moved from Bakersfield to Paso Robles between 1978 and 1980 and planted their first vineyard east of the Salinas River. From the late 1980s, Hope Farms sold Cabernet grapes to Chuck Wagner of Caymus for his second label, Liberty School. In 1996 the family took over the Liberty School label and founded Treana (Hope Family Wines timeline).

Austin Hope graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in fruit science in 1995 and became assistant winemaker for the family. He took over as Treana Red winemaker in 1998, and in 2000 he launched Austin Hope Winery, first focused on Rhône-style wines. Hope Family Wines became the umbrella company for all the family's labels in 2009 (timeline).

The Austin Hope label stayed with Rhône varieties from the family's estate vineyard until 2017, when Austin released his first Cabernet Sauvignon (Hope Family Wines). The oldest Cabernet fact sheet the winery publishes is for the 2015, bottled on August 22, 2017 (2015 fact sheet). The fact sheets quote Austin Hope as owner and winemaker.

Where the fruit comes from

The winery picks vineyards and growers for this wine from all over the Paso Robles AVA (2023 fact sheet). Across all its brands, the family works with more than 50 growers, and it buys only from growers certified under the SIP sustainability program (Hope Family Wines).

The mix of districts changes each year. The 2015 drew on five: Creston, Estrella, Adelaida, El Pomar and Willow Creek (2015 fact sheet). The 2021 came from nine of the eleven districts, including Templeton Gap and San Miguel (2021 fact sheet). The 2024 used six, with most of the fruit from Creston, Paso Robles Highlands, Estrella and Geneseo, at 900 to 1,700 feet (2024 fact sheet).

Austin Hope vintages and oak

The fact sheets list the grape as Cabernet Sauvignon but do not give a blend breakdown, so we show the oak and sourcing instead. The oak plan changed in 2018. The first three vintages spent 16 to 18 months in 75% new French oak. From 2018, each vineyard lot is aged on its own in mostly used French oak, and the final blend gets a short finish of two or three months in 75% new French oak.

These four prices don't measure the same thing. The winery price is for the current release. Shop prices mix vintages. Auction prices are what one lot sold for, with the buyer's premium but before shipping, tax and storage. A restaurant price includes service.

Shops ask $61 to $80 for the 2017 to 2024 vintages. The 2015 is rare in shops: six sellers, with a median of $210. At auction the gap is wide. The 2019, with 156 sales, sold for a median of $30, and the 2020 for $33. The 2015 is the only vintage above $70 at auction, at $76.

We leave a cell empty when fewer than five sellers or five sales stand behind it. The current 2024 has no auction sales yet; 121 shops offer it at a median of $61.

Per-vintage shop figures leave out stores whose listings do not state a reliable vintage. We leave out the 2020 because its shop seller count is not plausible, which points to a vintage labeling problem in the listings.

At auction

We have 420 sales with a recorded price, at 14 auction houses, from February 2020 to October 2026. Spectrum Wine Auctions accounts for 305 of them, followed by K&L Wines (61) and Winebid (32). Half of all sales fall between $30 and $50 a bottle.

Volumes are small after 2021, but the median has risen. It was $30 in 2021 and has been $53 to $67 since 2024.
